Purpose
Develops clean jab and rear-hand combinations, straight-line defence and balanced exits in a simplified live round.
Setup
- Pair boxers at long range
- Only jabs and straight rear hands are allowed to the agreed target areas
- Hooks and uppercuts are prohibited
- Use only with registered, medically cleared boxers wearing full sparring equipment, inside a boxing ring and under the direct supervision of an appropriately licensed Level 2 coach
- Keep contact light and controlled
- Stop the drill if either boxer loses control, shape or concentration
Run it
- 1. Both boxers use footwork, feints, jabs and rear straight punches to create clean scoring opportunities.
- 2. Defences may include catches, parries, blocks, slips, pulls, steps and pivots.
- 3. After each attack, the boxer must recover stance before beginning another exchange.
- 4. Run three rounds and ask each boxer to identify one straight-punch pattern that worked.
Coach checks
- Punch through a clear line rather than forcing the rear hand behind a blocked jab.
- Keep the rear heel, hip and shoulder connected without over-rotating.
- Move the head or feet after the final straight punch.
- Reduce speed immediately if straight shots begin landing with excessive force.
Scale it
- Easier: allow single straight punches only, with a reset after each attack.
- Harder: allow combinations of up to three straight punches and require a defensive action after the final shot.
Common faults
- Falling square after the rear hand - finish with the hips under control and recover stance.
- Throwing repeated one-twos with no setup - use feints, rhythm changes and body jabs to create the line.
Amateur relevance
Builds high-percentage scoring patterns and organised defence against the punches most commonly used to control long-range amateur exchanges.
Use it
Use with novices beginning live decision-making or as a technical reset for experienced boxers whose open sparring becomes untidy.
