Purpose

Develops live head movement by allowing counters only after a successful slip or roll has taken the boxer off the attack line.

Setup

  • Both boxers may attack normally at controlled pace
  • A boxer may counter only after successfully slipping a straight punch or rolling beneath a hook
  • Hand-defence-only counters do not count
  • Use only with registered, medically cleared boxers wearing full sparring equipment, inside a boxing ring and under the direct supervision of an appropriately licensed Level 2 coach
  • Keep contact light and controlled
  • Stop the drill if either boxer loses control, shape or concentration

Run it

  1. 1. Boxer A creates an attack using controlled straight punches and hooks.
  2. 2. Boxer B uses a slip or roll to make a punch miss, then may counter with one or two punches.
  3. 3. If B blocks or catches instead, B must reposition without countering.
  4. 4. Continue live and allow the attacking role to change naturally.

Coach checks

  • Move the head just far enough to clear the punch.
  • Keep the eyes on the opponent throughout the slip or roll.
  • Counter from the new position without standing upright first.
  • Control hook speed and power so rolling remains safe and readable.

Scale it

  • Easier: allow straight punches only, so counters are unlocked by slips.
  • Harder: include controlled hooks and require an angle exit after the counter.

Common faults

  • Making exaggerated head movements that destroy stance - reduce the movement and keep the feet underneath.
  • Predetermining the counter before the punch is read - identify the opening created by the actual defence.

Amateur relevance

Links evasive defence directly to scoring and helps the boxer remain active rather than moving the head without tactical purpose.

Use it

Use with boxers who already slip and roll correctly in partner drills but fail to apply those actions in live rounds.
