Purpose
Teaches boxers to create one unmistakably clean scoring action, recognise it and reset without adding unnecessary punches.
Setup
- Pair boxers in the ring
- Any permitted punch may be used, but the exchange ends immediately after the first clearly clean controlled score
- The coach or boxers call 'score' and both return to centre
- Use only with registered, medically cleared boxers wearing full sparring equipment, inside a boxing ring and under the direct supervision of an appropriately licensed Level 2 coach
- Keep contact light and controlled
- Stop the drill if either boxer loses control, shape or concentration
Run it
- 1. Both boxers move, feint and look for the first clear scoring opportunity.
- 2. When a clean controlled punch lands, both stop, acknowledge the score and reset at centre ring.
- 3. If neither scores within 15 seconds, the coach resets the exchange to prevent passive circling.
- 4. Run four short rounds and encourage different scoring solutions.
Coach checks
- Prioritise accuracy, timing and position over volume.
- Do not continue punching after a clean score has ended the exchange.
- Use feints and footwork to create the opening rather than waiting.
- Keep the score controlled and technically clear.
Scale it
- Easier: allow jabs and straight rear hands only.
- Harder: the score counts only if the boxer exits in stance without being immediately touched back.
Common faults
- Throwing a flurry because the first punch missed - reset the attack and create another clear opportunity.
- Arguing over marginal contact - the coach decides and immediately restarts the learning task.
Amateur relevance
Improves recognition of clean scoring opportunities and rewards accuracy, timing and control rather than uncontrolled output.
Use it
Use as an introductory live game or between harder rounds to restore technical clarity and decision quality.
