Teaches boxers to leave the opponent’s return line after scoring rather than stepping straight back or remaining stationary.

Purpose
Teaches boxers to leave the opponent’s return line after scoring rather than stepping straight back or remaining stationary.
Setup
- Both boxers spar with controlled contact
- After landing a clean scoring punch or combination, the attacker must make a lateral step, pivot or turn before attacking again
- Use only with registered, medically cleared boxers wearing full sparring equipment, inside a boxing ring and under the direct supervision of an appropriately licensed Level 2 coach
- Keep contact light and controlled
- Stop the drill if either boxer loses control, shape or concentration
Run it
- 1. Boxer A creates and lands a controlled scoring action.
- 2. A immediately exits left or right while preserving stance and guard.
- 3. Boxer B attempts a controlled return if A remains directly in front.
- 4. Continue live and award the learning success only when score and angle are both completed.
Coach checks
- Move after the score without crossing the feet.
- Choose the angle away from the opponent’s strongest return line.
- Keep the eyes and guard on the opponent during the exit.
- Use a small useful angle rather than a dramatic spin or run.
Scale it
- Easier: use jab-only sparring and require an angle after every clean jab.
- Harder: the opponent may actively block the preferred exit, forcing the scorer to choose the other side.
Common faults
- Stepping straight backwards after scoring - leave the line laterally.
- Pivoting before the punch has recovered - bring the hands and hips back under control first.
Amateur relevance
Builds clean scoring followed by visible control of position, reducing immediate counters and improving ring generalship.
Use it
Use with all levels after footwork and pivot preparation. It is especially useful for boxers who admire their punches.
