Purpose

Develops contrasting tactical decisions by assigning one boxer a narrow lead to protect and the other a deficit that must be recovered intelligently.

Setup

  • Boxer A is told they are narrowly ahead with one minute remaining
  • Boxer B is told they are behind and must increase effective scoring without becoming reckless
  • Swap roles each round
  • Use only with registered, medically cleared boxers wearing full sparring equipment, inside a boxing ring and under the direct supervision of an appropriately licensed Level 2 coach
  • Keep contact light and controlled
  • Stop the drill if either boxer loses control, shape or concentration

Run it

  1. 1. A uses scoring, position, selective exchanges and safe exits to protect the lead.
  2. 2. B raises purposeful pressure and output while preserving defence and balance.
  3. 3. The coach scores the scenario on clean punches, control and tactical execution rather than raw volume.
  4. 4. After 60 seconds, discuss whether each boxer’s decisions matched the assigned score situation.

Coach checks

  • A remains active enough to avoid surrendering initiative.
  • B increases urgency without abandoning setup or defence.
  • Both understand that tactical control is not the same as avoiding engagement.
  • Power remains controlled despite the competitive scenario.

Scale it

  • Easier: restrict both boxers to straight punches while learning the tactical roles.
  • Harder: change the score situation halfway through the round without warning.

Common faults

  • A runs and stops scoring entirely - use the jab, counters and ring position to remain convincing.
  • B swings recklessly because time is short - raise tempo through better entries and sustained pressure.

Amateur relevance

Teaches boxers to alter risk, tempo and ring position according to the likely state of a bout.

Use it

Use late in tactical sessions with experienced boxers who can remain controlled while working under competitive instructions.
