Purpose
Teaches one boxer to apply intelligent pressure while the other uses lateral movement, angles and selective counters to avoid being driven backwards.
Setup
- Boxer A is the pressure boxer and must advance with control
- Boxer B is the mover and should escape laterally rather than retreating continuously
- Swap roles each round
- Use only with registered, medically cleared boxers wearing full sparring equipment, inside a boxing ring and under the direct supervision of an appropriately licensed Level 2 coach
- Keep contact light and controlled
- Stop the drill if either boxer loses control, shape or concentration
Run it
- 1. A advances behind the guard, lead hand and balanced steps.
- 2. B may score and move, but should leave the line after each exchange.
- 3. A attempts to cut off B’s exit without rushing or smothering.
- 4. Change roles every 60 seconds and complete two rounds in each role.
Coach checks
- A closes space with the feet before punching.
- B changes direction before reaching the ropes.
- Both keep stance and guard during pressure transitions.
- A’s contact remains controlled because B is solving a constrained escape task.
Scale it
- Easier: A may jab only and B works from open space.
- Harder: B begins near the ropes and must reach centre within ten seconds.
Common faults
- A chases and falls square - shorten the steps and cut the ring.
- B runs in a predictable circle - use pivots, stops, counters and direction changes.
Amateur relevance
Develops purposeful front-foot pressure and composed movement under pressure, both central to controlling amateur exchanges.
Use it
Use for boxers preparing to face contrasting styles or for movers who retreat without creating angles.
