Purpose

Develops the ability to select one clear counter after defending instead of throwing an uncontrolled reply.

Setup

  • Both boxers spar under controlled conditions
  • After defending an attack, the defender may return only one punch before moving or resetting
  • The original attacker may defend but cannot immediately re-attack
  • Use only with registered, medically cleared boxers wearing full sparring equipment, inside a boxing ring and under the direct supervision of an appropriately licensed Level 2 coach
  • Keep contact light and controlled
  • Stop the drill if either boxer loses control, shape or concentration

Run it

  1. 1. Boxer A attacks with up to three controlled punches.
  2. 2. Boxer B defends and chooses one counter that best fits the opening.
  3. 3. Both reposition after the counter before the next boxer initiates.
  4. 4. Continue live, alternating naturally between attacker and defender.

Coach checks

  • Choose the counter from the available line rather than from a rehearsed favourite.
  • Return immediately enough to exploit the opening but without rushing.
  • Recover stance and guard after the single counter.
  • Use accuracy and timing, not increased power, to make the counter effective.

Scale it

  • Easier: limit attacks and counters to straight punches.
  • Harder: the counter counts only if the defender also exits without being touched.

Common faults

  • Throwing two or three counters through habit - stop after one and improve its selection.
  • Countering after the opportunity has closed - move, reset and wait for the next exchange.

Amateur relevance

Produces visible, well-timed counters and teaches the boxer to punish an opening without losing defensive shape.

Use it

Use after specific counter drills and before more open counterpunching rounds.
