Purpose
Prevents continuous straight-line retreat and develops pivots, side steps, turns and counters as alternatives to giving away the ring.
Setup
- Both boxers spar normally at controlled pace, but neither may take more than one consecutive step directly backwards
- The next movement must be lateral, rotational, forward or stationary
- Use only with registered, medically cleared boxers wearing full sparring equipment, inside a boxing ring and under the direct supervision of an appropriately licensed Level 2 coach
- Keep contact light and controlled
- Stop the drill if either boxer loses control, shape or concentration
Run it
- 1. Both boxers engage under normal controlled sparring conditions.
- 2. A boxer may take one rearward step to manage distance.
- 3. Before another rearward step, the boxer must pivot, move laterally, hold position or counter.
- 4. The coach calls 'line' and resets whenever a boxer retreats twice in succession.
Coach checks
- Use the first backward step to create the next decision.
- Pivot before the ropes remove the available space.
- Keep stance width when changing direction.
- Do not replace retreat with reckless forward trading.
Scale it
- Easier: use straight-punches-only sparring under the movement rule.
- Harder: begin one boxer near the ropes and require an exit without a second backward step.
Common faults
- Taking small disguised backward shuffles - enforce the tactical purpose, not just the wording of the rule.
- Forcing a counter when no safe line exists - pivot or hold position instead.
Amateur relevance
Reduces unnecessary loss of ring position and helps boxers appear composed and tactically in control under pressure.
Use it
Use for boxers who habitually retreat in straight lines or become trapped by pressure.
