Conditioned sparring drill
Make the first punch miss
Use a small defensive movement to make the opening punch miss while staying balanced and close enough to respond.

Purpose
Use a small defensive movement to make the opening punch miss while staying balanced and close enough to respond.
Setup
- A attacks with one controlled jab
- B uses a slip or small step and does not punch in the base version
- Begin near jab range with plenty of space behind both boxers
- Use only with appropriately matched, registered and medically cleared boxers wearing full sparring equipment, in a boxing ring under the direct supervision of an appropriately licensed Level 2 coach
- Follow the governing body’s current sparring requirements
- Keep contact light and controlled
- Stop immediately if either boxer loses control, becomes distressed or cannot maintain the agreed task
- Coach calls override every game condition
Run it
- A moves and feints before choosing the moment for a single jab.
- B makes the jab miss with a small movement, recovers guard and holds a balanced position.
- The coach awards B a task point only if the jab misses and B could answer without lunging or taking a chasing step. No actual counter is required.
- Reset after each attempt. A scores a task point for a clean controlled jab.
- Alternate roles across four 60-second rounds, with 60 seconds rest.
Coach checks
- B watches A’s upper body and stays aware of the rear hand.
- Keep the head within a balanced base; avoid deep ducks or turning away.
- Assess the finishing distance, not just whether the punch missed.
Scale it
- Easier: a predictable single jab at reduced speed.
- Harder: A may choose a lead or rear straight; B may add one straight counter after a successful evasion.
Common faults
- Retreating several steps: shorten the movement and reset the starting distance.
- Guessing a slip before the punch: reduce speed and read the actual line.
Amateur relevance
Preserves the opportunity to counter after avoiding the opponent’s opening shot.
Use it
Use before live countering rounds when boxers evade successfully but move too far to answer.
