Purpose
Develops entry, exit, straight-punch scoring and distance maintenance by removing prolonged mid-range and close-range exchanges.
Setup
- Pair boxers at long range
- Straight punches, feints and long-range footwork are allowed
- If the boxers remain at close range after an exchange, the coach calls a reset to long range
- Use only with registered, medically cleared boxers wearing full sparring equipment, inside a boxing ring and under the direct supervision of an appropriately licensed Level 2 coach
- Keep contact light and controlled
- Stop the drill if either boxer loses control, shape or concentration
Run it
- 1. Both boxers use feet and lead-hand work to create a safe entry.
- 2. Attack with controlled long-range punches and leave before the distance collapses.
- 3. If the boxers remain chest-to-chest or begin short exchanges, reset at long range.
- 4. Complete three rounds with emphasis on controlling when range opens and closes.
Coach checks
- Enter behind a credible jab or feint.
- Reach the target with feet and stance, not by leaning.
- Exit before the opponent can establish close-range position.
- Keep the pace technical and avoid lunging to manufacture contact.
Scale it
- Easier: use jabs only and reset after each exchange.
- Harder: allow all straight punches to head and body and require a lateral exit.
Common faults
- Reaching from outside range - step into position before releasing the punch.
- Backing out with the feet too narrow - recover stance during the exit.
Amateur relevance
Builds control of the range where many amateur exchanges begin and helps boxers score without being drawn into unnecessary trading.
Use it
Use with beginners or long-range boxers before rounds that add hooks and closer exchanges.
