Purpose
Teaches the boxer to create attacks and defensive answers using the jab, lead hook and lead-hand control without relying on the rear hand.
Setup
- Pair boxers at long to mid-range
- Jabs and lead hooks may be used to the permitted target areas
- The rear hand may defend but cannot punch
- Use only with registered, medically cleared boxers wearing full sparring equipment, inside a boxing ring and under the direct supervision of an appropriately licensed Level 2 coach
- Keep contact light and controlled
- Stop the drill if either boxer loses control, shape or concentration
Run it
- 1. Both boxers use the lead hand to feint, jab, hook, parry and create angles.
- 2. A lead hook is allowed only when the boxer has reached safe hook range and remains balanced.
- 3. After scoring, the boxer must recover the lead hand and reposition before attacking again.
- 4. Complete three controlled rounds, with the coach reinforcing range and compact hook mechanics.
Coach checks
- Use the jab to earn the hook rather than swinging the hook from too far away.
- Keep the rear hand attached to the defensive side of the face.
- Turn the feet and hips on the lead hook without pulling the head past the lead knee.
- Maintain learning pace and do not chase power because punch choices are restricted.
Scale it
- Easier: use the jab only for the first round, then add the lead hook.
- Harder: require every lead hook to be set up by a jab, feint, parry or angle change.
Common faults
- Throwing a long, looping lead hook from jab range - step into correct range or stay with the jab.
- Dropping the rear hand while concentrating on the lead hand - keep the rear glove responsible for defence.
Amateur relevance
Improves lead-hand dominance, scoring variety and the ability to open or finish exchanges without becoming dependent on the rear hand.
Use it
Use after jab work and before broader conditioned sparring. It is best for boxers who jab predictably or struggle to use the lead hook safely.
