Purpose

Develops the boxer’s ability to vary, defend and score with the jab while solving a live opponent at controlled intensity.

Setup

  • Pair boxers as A and B at long range
  • Both may jab to the head or body and may use any appropriate defence or footwork, but no rear-hand punches or hooks are allowed
  • Use only with registered, medically cleared boxers wearing full sparring equipment, inside a boxing ring and under the direct supervision of an appropriately licensed Level 2 coach
  • Keep contact light and controlled
  • Stop the drill if either boxer loses control, shape or concentration

Run it

  1. 1. Both boxers move freely and use only the jab to create, defend and score.
  2. 2. A clean jab may be followed by movement, a feint or another jab, but never by a different punch.
  3. 3. The coach pauses the action if either boxer begins pawing, pushing or increasing power.
  4. 4. Work for 90 seconds, rest for 60 seconds and repeat for three rounds.

Coach checks

  • Change the jab’s rhythm, target and purpose rather than throwing it at one speed.
  • Bring the lead hand straight back to guard after every jab.
  • Move the feet before reaching for a target that is out of range.
  • Keep contact light enough for both boxers to continue reading and learning.

Scale it

  • Easier: allow head jabs only and require a reset after every clean score.
  • Harder: permit jabs to head and body, feints and double jabs, with a compulsory angle exit after scoring.

Common faults

  • Reaching with the jab and falling over the front foot - shorten the step and keep the head between the feet.
  • Turning the round into hand fighting or glove slapping - score with a proper jab, then reset the lead hand.

Amateur relevance

Builds the lead-hand control, visible scoring, range management and tempo changes needed to establish authority in an amateur bout.

Use it

Use early in a sparring session after technical preparation. It suits novice and experienced boxers and works well before straight-punch or open rounds.
