Purpose
Separates the skills of starting an exchange and responding to one so both boxers learn clearer tactical roles.
Setup
- Boxer A must initiate every exchange
- Boxer B may punch only after A has committed to an attack
- B can defend, evade and counter, but cannot lead
- Swap roles halfway through each round
- Use only with registered, medically cleared boxers wearing full sparring equipment, inside a boxing ring and under the direct supervision of an appropriately licensed Level 2 coach
- Keep contact light and controlled
- Stop the drill if either boxer loses control, shape or concentration
Run it
- 1. A uses feints and footwork to begin a controlled attack of up to three punches.
- 2. B reads the attack, defends and may answer with a controlled counter combination.
- 3. Once the exchange ends, both reset tactically and A must initiate again.
- 4. The coach calls 'change' halfway through the round so the roles reverse.
Coach checks
- A must initiate with purpose rather than stepping in carelessly to satisfy the rule.
- B waits for genuine commitment and does not turn a feint into an illegal lead attack.
- Both finish exchanges balanced and defensively responsible.
- Keep counters controlled, especially when A is moving into them.
Scale it
- Easier: restrict A to straight punches and B to one counter.
- Harder: allow A to feint without attacking and require B to distinguish the real entry before countering.
Common faults
- B begins attacking before A commits - return B to the reading and countering role.
- A rushes because B cannot lead - insist on feints, range and safe entries.
Amateur relevance
Develops initiative, anticipation and the ability to control whether an exchange begins on the boxer’s terms.
Use it
Use for intermediate boxers after defence-and-counter work. It is valuable when one boxer is too passive or counters without reading.
