Purpose
Teaches the defender to manage danger through feet, distance and angles rather than depending entirely on punches or a static guard.
Setup
- Boxer A attacks with agreed controlled punches
- Boxer B cannot punch and should avoid prolonged shelling; B must use steps, pivots, turns and range changes to stay safe
- Swap roles each round
- Use only with registered, medically cleared boxers wearing full sparring equipment, inside a boxing ring and under the direct supervision of an appropriately licensed Level 2 coach
- Keep contact light and controlled
- Stop the drill if either boxer loses control, shape or concentration
Run it
- 1. A applies intelligent controlled pressure and attempts to create scoring positions.
- 2. B uses footwork to make attacks fall short, leave the line or escape pressure.
- 3. The coach resets if B runs continuously, crosses the feet or becomes trapped without a solution.
- 4. Change roles every 60 seconds and complete two rounds in each role.
Coach checks
- B moves early from the opponent’s preparation, not late from the punch itself.
- Use short efficient steps and keep stance width.
- A cuts space rather than chasing directly behind B.
- A maintains light contact because B has no punching deterrent.
Scale it
- Easier: A uses the jab only and B works in open space.
- Harder: B begins near the ropes and may earn one counter only after escaping to centre.
Common faults
- B circles endlessly without changing direction - use pivots, stops and turns to regain useful position.
- A follows B instead of cutting off the ring - step toward the escape route rather than the boxer’s current location.
Amateur relevance
Improves ringcraft, distance control and the ability to avoid scoring attacks without becoming passive or trapped.
Use it
Use for boxers who freeze under pressure or rely on a high guard while their feet stop working.
