Final action must be defensive
Builds the habit of completing every attack with a defensive or positional action rather than remaining on the centre line.

Purpose
Builds the habit of completing every attack with a defensive or positional action rather than remaining on the centre line.
Setup
- Both boxers spar with controlled contact
- Every attacking combination must finish with a visible slip, roll, pull, block, step, pivot or angle exit before the boxer can attack again
- Use only with registered, medically cleared boxers wearing full sparring equipment, inside a boxing ring and under the direct supervision of an appropriately licensed Level 2 coach
- Keep contact light and controlled
- Stop the drill if either boxer loses control, shape or concentration
Run it
- 1. Boxer A attacks with one to three controlled punches.
- 2. A immediately completes a defensive action and only then may reset or continue moving.
- 3. Boxer B may counter if A fails to finish defensively.
- 4. Continue live, with the coach calling 'finish' whenever a boxer admires the attack.
Coach checks
- Plan the position after the combination, not only the punches.
- Keep the defensive action connected to the final punch.
- Do not use a large escape that gives away the ring unnecessarily.
- Maintain controlled contact so the counter remains a learning consequence.
Scale it
- Easier: require a step back or guard recovery after every attack.
- Harder: the coach names a specific defensive finish for each round, such as pivot, roll or slip.
Common faults
- Pausing after the last punch before defending - connect the defensive finish immediately.
- Using the same exit every time - select the finish according to range and opponent position.
Amateur relevance
Reduces clean return scoring by teaching boxers to remain defensively responsible throughout the complete exchange.
Use it
Use after combination work and before open sparring, especially for boxers who score cleanly but are immediately hit back.
