Purpose

Develops the ability to recognise and use the short countering window created immediately after a successful defence.

Setup

  • Both boxers spar under controlled conditions
  • A counter counts only when it begins immediately after a successful defence, within the coach’s approximate two-second window
  • Delayed attacks become new attacks rather than counters
  • Use only with registered, medically cleared boxers wearing full sparring equipment, inside a boxing ring and under the direct supervision of an appropriately licensed Level 2 coach
  • Keep contact light and controlled
  • Stop the drill if either boxer loses control, shape or concentration

Run it

  1. 1. Boxer A attacks with up to three controlled punches.
  2. 2. Boxer B defends and, if a clear line exists, begins a counter immediately.
  3. 3. The coach calls 'late' when B waits too long and the countering opportunity has passed.
  4. 4. Continue live, allowing either boxer to become attacker or defender.

Coach checks

  • Defence and counter should feel like one connected decision.
  • Do not counter merely because the clock is running; the line must be safe and available.
  • Keep the first counter compact and balanced.
  • Control the force of counters against an opponent moving forward.

Scale it

  • Easier: use straight attacks and allow one straight counter.
  • Harder: allow varied attacks and require the countering boxer to exit after scoring.

Common faults

  • Waiting for the attacker to fully reset - recognise the opening earlier.
  • Countering blindly into a covered line - move or reset when no safe target is available.

Amateur relevance

Sharpens timely counters that are visible to judges and prevents defensive moments from becoming passive periods.

Use it

Use after catch, parry, slip and block counters have been practised technically.
