Purpose
Develops balanced close-range work, compact defence, short scoring punches and turns without allowing the boxers to separate into long-range sparring.
Setup
- Begin at controlled close range in the centre of the ring
- Boxers may use compact legal punches, blocks, rolls and turns
- If they separate beyond working range, the coach resets them
- Use only with registered, medically cleared boxers wearing full sparring equipment, inside a boxing ring and under the direct supervision of an appropriately licensed Level 2 coach
- Keep contact light and controlled
- Stop the drill if either boxer loses control, shape or concentration
Run it
- 1. Both boxers begin in balanced close-range positions without leaning or holding.
- 2. Use short controlled punches and compact defences to score and change position.
- 3. A clean turn or angle is encouraged, but leaving close range causes a reset.
- 4. Run short rounds and stop immediately if power, posture or control deteriorates.
Coach checks
- Keep the head positioned safely and the feet underneath the hips.
- Punch short and return the gloves to defensive positions.
- Create space with feet and body position, not pushing or holding.
- Use very low power because distance is short.
Scale it
- Easier: allow body punches only and reset after every three-punch exchange.
- Harder: award success for turning the opponent and scoring immediately from the new angle.
Common faults
- Leaning chest-to-chest and smothering all work - create a small working gap with stance and position.
- Swinging wide hooks at close range - shorten the arc and control the shoulder.
Amateur relevance
Improves the ability to remain organised and score cleanly when an opponent closes distance or exchanges become crowded.
Use it
Use only with advanced, well-controlled boxers after technical inside-work preparation. Keep the total volume low.
