Conditioned sparring drill
Change the rhythm
Vary the timing of entries and punches while the defender distinguishes a committed attack from a feint.

Purpose
Vary the timing of entries and punches while the defender distinguishes a committed attack from a feint.
Setup
- A initiates with one or two straight punches
- B defends and may return one straight counter
- Feints are allowed but there is no requirement to punch to a fixed beat
- Use only with appropriately matched, registered and medically cleared boxers wearing full sparring equipment, in a boxing ring under the direct supervision of an appropriately licensed Level 2 coach
- Follow the governing body’s current sparring requirements
- Keep contact light and controlled
- Stop immediately if either boxer loses control, becomes distressed or cannot maintain the agreed task
- Coach calls override every game condition
Run it
- A explores different pauses before entering and between the first and second punch while keeping balance.
- B reads distance and commitment rather than reacting to every shoulder movement.
- Reset after B’s counter opportunity. The coach notes successful entries with noticeably different timing, rather than rewarding volume.
- Halfway through the round, ask A to change the timing pattern without increasing contact.
- Swap roles after each 60-second round. Complete four rounds with 60 seconds rest.
Coach checks
- A changes timing without slowing guard recovery.
- B’s defensive responses remain compact.
- A pause is a tactical choice; it must not leave the boxer exposed in range.
Scale it
- Easier: explore two coach-agreed timings using the jab only.
- Harder: allow head/body choices and let B counter any clear opening within the same punch limit.
Common faults
- Confusing a rhythm change with more force: keep the same light contact.
- Repeating the new rhythm predictably: vary the entry delay as well as the combination.
Amateur relevance
Helps boxers disrupt predictable exchanges and recognise changes in an opponent’s timing.
Use it
Use once both boxers manage straight-punch conditioned rounds reliably.
